A Stroke Unit to be proud of

Hospital staff and fundraisers joined trustees of Southend Hospital Charitable Foundation at a special reception on Tuesday 31 March to celebrate the successful completion of the StrokeBusters Appeal.

Thanks to the generosity of the local community and the dedication of hospital staff the stroke unit at Southend University Hospital is now a centre of excellence with vast improvements to patient’s facilities including an acute stroke unit, state-of-the-art equipment, gym, garden and education centre.

Over 140 patients have now received the clot busting drug compared with an average of six patients per year at hospitals around the country resulting in a 40% reduction in mortality rates.

The million pound project was launched in April 2007 raising over £650,000 from the appeal with the remaining sum funded by Southend University Hospital.

Chairman of the Charitable Foundation, Colin George, thanked fundraisers saying: “The support we have received from individuals, groups and local businesses has been tremendous particularly in view of current financial difficulties.  We now have a stroke unit to be very proud of which will benefit us all.”
